Pod Point Home Charger Review

Pod Point is the longest-running seller of charging points for both electric and hybrid plug-in cars in the UK.

All-electric cars need to recharge their batteries either at a petrol station or at their home with a smart ev home charger – it’s obviously more comfortable to do this at home as you can top-up your battery overnight, just as you would your mobile phone.

If you want to install a charger at home, you become eligible for the home charge grant from OLEV when you purchase the home charging device.

‘Chargepoints must be able to be remotely accessed and capable of receiving, interpreting, and reacting to a signal. Smart charging can reduce peaks in electricity demand, reducing the impact of electric vehicles on the electricity system and keeping costs down for consumers by encouraging off-peak charging’. OLEV, 2019.

So, if you have dedicated off-road parking, you too can purchase a home charging unit and have financial help with this.

But there are a lot of contenders since the days when there were really only Pod Point battery charger offerings, but many users still believe they are leaders of the pack…

What actually is a smart charger?
There are EV battery charger manufacturers who claim that their units are smart devices, but they are often just units which can provide energy usage data

What makes a smart battery charge unit is the information inside, which communicates with the back-office system (a computer) and allows the unit to be remotely accessed and able to deal with commands usually via your home Wi-Fi.

Most EV car suppliers such as Audi, Volvo, Jaguar, Peugeot, Hyundai, and Nissan (and this is just for starters) love the Pod Point.

The latest addition to the Pod Point family is the Solo, which is for home wall box buyers.

There are three versions with two mounting options available of the Solo model – you can choose either tethered or untethered, which basically refers to whether the box comes with a charging cable or not.

The Pod Point device offers:

• £350 off the final cost with the OLEV grant
• No faff – just plug-in and confirm with your Pod Point app
• Wi-Fi enabled smart charger which works with the Pod Point App (iOS & Android devices) via Wi-Fi, enabling you to view all your charging activity and related costs on your smartphone
• The Wi-Fi connection provides remote support and software updates that enhance the performance of your charge point
• Includes automatic power balancing so you can charge your car simultaneously with your home usage
• Provision of charging speeds of 3.6kW or 7.2kW
• Provides an EV with up to 30 miles of range per hour (RPH)
• Compatible with all plug-in electric vehicles
• Available with a universal socket or tethered type 1 / type 2 connector
• Tethered lead 4.8m in length

Pod Point has been voted the highest-rated universal charging experience by UK drivers, so they must be getting something right.
